TIMOTHY MADDEN
Bass-baritone
"Timothy Madden as Bottom is manic, and maniacally funny....
His impressive physical comedy skills performed while singing in a rich bass-baritone made him an audience favorite."
Meizhu Lui, July 15, 2019, Full Review
Bass-baritone Timothy Madden, hailed by the Chicago Stage Standard as "endlessly fun, full-voiced, totally physicalized," has been especially praised for his work in comedic roles. He gave "an excellent comic performance" in his debut as Sir Despard in Theater at Monmouth's Ruddigore (David A. Sargent, Sun Journal), and Meizhu Lui of Big Island Music Magazine applauded his "impressive physical comedy skills" and "rich bass-baritone" in Hawai'i Performing Arts Festival's A Midsummer Night's Dream.
The 2020-2021 season includes performances as Superintendent Budd in Benjamin Britten's Albert Herring as a guest artist with the University of Missouri-Kansas City (canceled due to COVID-19) and Smudge in the musical Forever Plaid with Musical Theater Heritage in Kansas City, Missouri. In May he will cover Vaudemont and Bethune with New Amsterdam Opera (canceled due to COVID-19). In the summer, he joins Opera Saratoga as a Festival Artist and will sing Samuel in The Pirates of Penzance while covering Elder/Administrator in Sky on Swings (canceled due to COVID-19). Other role debuts for 2020-2021 season include Jupiter in Platée, the Senator in The Shining, and Zuniga in Carmen.
In the summer of 2019, Timothy joined the Hawai'i Performing Arts Festival as a professional fellow, singing Nick Bottom in Britten's A Midsummer Night's Dream. He was a semi-finalist in the Mildred Miller International Voice Competition in October of 2019.
Timothy joined Des Moines Metro Opera as a member of their apprentice artist program for the summer of 2018. In addition to concerts and scenes performances, he covered Grandpa Moss in Copland's The Tender Land, presented as part of DMMO's Second Stage series and sang with his fellow young artists in the choruses for Die Fledermaus and Rusalka. He performed as Figaro, the French general, Pistola, and Pangloss in scenes from Le nozze di Figaro, Silent Night, Falstaff, and Candide. He also sang Raimondo and Antonio with the Des Moines Metro Opera Orchestra in selections from Lucia di Lammermoor and Le nozze di Figaro for DMMO's annual, Stars of Tomorrow concert.
Timothy has been lucky to sing for school-aged children and community members across the Midwest. He has participated in educational outreach tours for Des Moines Metro Opera and Fargo-Moorhead Opera. In 2018, he toured Iowa communities as part of Opera Iowa's spring tour singing Doctor Bartolo in an English language version of The Barber of Seville and the Trouble Man and Narrator in John Davies' rendition of Jack and the Beanstalk using the music of Sir Arthur Sullivan. In 2017, he performed scenes, arias, and an abbreviated version of Pirates of Penzance in communities across North Dakota, Minnesota, and Wisconsin as a Gate City Bank Young Artist with Fargo-Moorhead Opera.
Timothy recently made company and role debuts with Fargo-Moorhead Opera, Musical Theater Heritage, Opera Steamboat, and Opera Omaha. He sang on the concert stage as the bass soloist in Handel's Dixit Dominus, Bach's G Minor Mass, and Puccini's Messa di Gloria. In competitions, he was a semi-finalist for the Mildred Miller International Voice Competition, awarded 2nd Place in Tier II of the James Toland Vocal Arts' 3rd annual competition and received the University of Nebraska-Lincoln Friends of Opera Developing Artist Award in the Nebraska District of the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions.
Timothy's artistic interests include stage directing and conducting. In 2019, he served as the stage and music director for Gilbert and Sullivan's Trial by Jury as part of Landlocked Opera's inaugural season. Previously, he has directed Amahl and the Night Visitors and Die Zauberflöte at the University of Nebraska and assistant directed Albert Herring. He also served as conductor for Amahl and the Night Visitors and Die Zauberflöte in addition to serving as the rehearsal conductor for Albert Herring.
"Madden’s Despard vamps in classic evil style, with long, pale, spindly fingers and diabolical laughter, as he schemes 'to live a blameless life! Muahahah!'"

Reviews
Smudge in Stuart Ross' Forever Plaid with Musical Theatre Heritage
"The MTH production of FOREVER PLAID features four local performers who would not be outclassed anywhere you might catch this show... Not only can these guys sing, they are super comedians and pretty good dancers."
"This cast does a great job of carrying through on the jokes. They have managed expertly to create four distinct personalities."
Alan Portner, Broadway World- Kansas City, February 9, 2020
Nick Bottom in Britten's A Midsummer Night's Dream with Hawaii Performing Arts Festival
"Timothy Madden as Bottom is manic, and maniacally funny. As he sings with his head changed into a donkey’s, his voice seems to break involuntarily into a bray as he kicks up his heels. His impressive physical comedy skills performed while singing in a rich bass/baritone made him an audience favorite."
Meizhu Lui, July 15, 2019,
Simone in Puccini's Gianni Schicchi with ARE Opera
"Timothy Madden's deeply resonant bass-baritone was just right for the role of Simone, the eldest and the wisest among the family."

Sir Despard Murgatroyd in Gilbert and Sullivan's Ruddigore with Theater at Monmouth
"Madden’s Despard vamps in classic evil style, with long, pale, spindly fingers and diabolical laughter, as he schemes 'to live a blameless life! Muahahah!'"
Megan Grumbling, The Portland Pheonix, September 2015
"Timothy Madden makes Sir Despard Murgatroyd's transformation from classic horror movie villain to respectable husband believable without overdoing and evidences a fine baritone."
Carla Maria Verdino-Süllwold, Talkin' Broadway, September 2015
"This is Madden’s TAM debut, and it’s an excellent comic performance."
David A. Sargent, Sun Journal, September 2015
Nick Bottom in Britten's A Midsummer Night's Dream with Chicago Summer Opera
"Bass-baritone Timothy Madden essayed a terrific Bottom, both vocally and theatrically, and obtained the largest laughs of the evening by playing Bottom’s transformation into an ass for truth, rather than parody."
Aaron Hunt, Newcity Stage, July 2015
"No production of Midsummer would be complete without a great Bottom, and Timothy Madden offers an endlessly fun, full- voiced, totally physicalized portrayal. His work anchors the strong work done by the motley crew of artisans as they struggle to create a production of Pyramus and Thisbe."
Julie S. Halpern, Chicago Stage Standard, July 2015
Bass soloist in Bach's G minor Mass with AGO Schola Cantorum and KC Baroque Consortium
"Timothy Madden sang the baritone solo, Gratias agimus tibi, with a devotional command of the room."
"He was clear, moved through timbres without notice, and maneuvered through Bach's florid lines as if he were taking a stroll."
Floyd E. Gingrich, KC Metropolis, May 2014
